Description
This stunning hand painted antique porcelain dish with its matching bamboo box is by Moriyama Mori-Machi of Japan.Experts in dating early Japanese porcelain date this set between 1926 and 1929.
The dish is described as being a divided condiment serving plate or sweet meat plate, while other Internet sites call it a Lunch Box.
Whereas the face of the plate is glazed, the bottom of the plate is unglazed.
The plate is stamped on the back with the Moriyama Mori-Machi (a stylized red double M within a heart surrounded with leaf sprays).
It is also stamped Hand Painted Japan.
The double M is also embossed on the back.
What is amazing about both the hand painted plate and the bamboo box is the fact that the colors remain so vibrant and beautiful after almost 100 years.
The box alone is gorgeous.
Then you remove the lid to find a pretty divided dish. Its foundation glaze is a vivid white.
Each of the five sections is covered in beautiful hand-painted clusters of yellow, green and gold flowers plus an abundance of green leaves. It is rimmed with green and gold garlands.
The bamboo box is also beautifully painted, mimicking the plate with the same colors as the plate, i.e., yellow and green.
There is bas relief on the lid, primarily the curlicues next to the rim and the central aspects of the flowers.
Not only is the top of the box hand painted but the sides of the bottom are also hand painted.
The bottom of the box shows “Made in Japan” in red lettering.
The box with its lid is 10 1/2" in diameter; the plate inside is 10" in diameter. The box is 1 7/8" deep. The box and plate together weigh 2 pounds 3 ounces (plus the weight of the packing material). Use the shipping drop down menu to select the shipping option that is best for you.
